Study timer vs Pomodoro: which interval actually helps focus
A study timer and a pomodoro are not the same tool. How to pick an interval length for revision, problem sets, and reading that actually sticks.
A study timer and a Pomodoro timer do the same arithmetic and solve different problems. Pomodoro enforces a break structure. A plain study timer just marks a boundary. Which one you want depends on whether your problem is starting, sustaining, or stopping.
The three problems
Starting. You have been avoiding the work for four days. The fix is a short, non-threatening block. Ten or fifteen minutes. The timer’s job is to make the commitment small enough that refusing it looks silly. Pomodoro’s 25 is already good here, and 10 is better.
Sustaining. You can start fine but you drift at minute 12, open a tab, and resurface at minute 40 having read about something unrelated. This is what Pomodoro is built for. The rule that a broken pomodoro does not count is the actual mechanism, not the length.
Stopping. You study for four hours straight, retain very little of hours three and four, and are useless the next day. Here you want a plain countdown with a hard stop and no automatic next block, because the system that keeps offering you another round is the problem.
Matching the tool to the problem matters more than the number of minutes.
Interval lengths by task

The 25-minute default is well suited to drilling and poorly suited to anything requiring a long thread of reasoning. Breaking a maths problem at minute 25 and coming back cold at minute 30 costs you more than the break is worth.
What the research actually supports
Two findings are solid and worth knowing.
Spacing beats massing. The same total study time distributed across several sessions produces better long-term retention than one continuous block. This is one of the most replicated results in learning research, going back to Ebbinghaus in the 1880s. Practically: four 40-minute sessions across four days beats one 160-minute session, by a lot.
Retrieval beats rereading. Testing yourself on material outperforms reviewing it, and the effect is large. This one is about what you do inside the block, not how long the block is.
Note that neither of these says anything about 25 minutes specifically. There is no strong evidence that any particular interval length is optimal. The Pomodoro interval is a useful scaffold, not a research finding, and anyone telling you 25 minutes is scientifically proven is selling something.
Ultradian rhythms, the roughly 90 to 120 minute alertness cycles Nathaniel Kleitman described, are the closest thing to a biological argument for a specific length, and even that is a rough shape rather than a schedule.
Building an actual study session
A workable default for exam revision:
- Decide what you are studying before the timer starts. “Study biology” is not a task. “Do the 20 questions at the end of chapter 6 without notes” is.
- Set 45 minutes on the pomodoro timer, or a flat 25 minute countdown if you want the simpler version.
- Phone in a different room. Not face down. A different room.
- When it ends, stand up and leave the desk for the full break. Not your phone.
- After three blocks, stop for at least an hour.
Three 45-minute blocks is a bit over two hours of real work. That is a good day of studying. Most people plan for six hours, get two hours of actual focus and four of low-grade guilt, and would be better off admitting it and going outside.
When the timer is the wrong tool
If you are consistently in flow and a timer interrupts it, stop using one. The point of the interval is to protect attention, and if attention is already fine, the timer is only a source of interruption.
The other failure mode is timer theatre: elaborate tracking, streaks, colour-coded logs, and very little studying. If setting up the session takes longer than five seconds, something has gone wrong.
