How it is different
The other timers on this site are built to be noticed: a rising pair for work, a falling pair for rest, ticks for the last three seconds. This one is built to be forgotten. There is one bell. It rings once when the sit begins after a short settle-in, once at each interval, and once at the end. Between bells the page is silent and the digits are the only thing that moves.
The default is a 30 minute sit with a bell every 10 minutes. That gives three blocks, which is enough structure for a body scan, then breath, then open awareness, or simply three reminders to come back. Set Bell every equal to Total for a single bell at the end.

Screen, sound, silence
The timer asks the phone or laptop to keep the screen awake while it runs, so the display does not go dark and the sit does not end with a locked phone. Turn the brightness down by hand if you want a dim room. The bell is generated in the browser, so there is nothing to download and it works with no connection after the first visit.
If you would rather sit in the dark with the phone face down, that works too: the timing is based on timestamps, so the bell lands on the right second as long as the page stays open. Mute is available for a fully silent sit where you only glance at the digits.
Questions people ask
- What does the bell sound like?
- One soft, generated tone with a two-second decay. Not a recorded singing bowl, so nothing has to download and it works offline. The same bell marks the start, every interval and the end.
- Will the screen stay on while I sit?
- Yes. The timer holds a screen wake lock while it runs, on phones and desktops, with a fallback for browsers without the API. Turn the brightness down by hand if the light bothers you.
- Does the bell ring if my phone locks or I switch apps?
- The timing stays exact because it is based on timestamps, and you will land on the right bell when you come back. But browsers only play sound from a page that is open, so leave the tab in front. The wake lock is there so the phone does not lock on its own.
- Can I have one bell at the end and nothing in between?
- Set "Bell every" to the same value as "Total". The preset pages for 5 and 10 minutes are already set up that way.
- Why is there no countdown tick before the bell?
- On purpose. The other timers tick for the last three seconds so you can brace for a change. In a sit that is the opposite of the point, so the meditation timer is silent until the bell.
