What this one is for
A 40 second timer is a HIIT work block. Forty on and twenty off is one of the most used ratios in group classes because forty seconds is long enough to push your heart rate up and short enough to hold decent form to the end.
Forty seconds is also a long wall sit, a hard row piece, and the station length on most circuit boards in a commercial gym.
Press Space to start. The screen stays awake and a beep lands at zero so you can stop looking at the phone.

Good for

- Circuit training stations
- Wall sits and long isometrics
- Hard rowing or bike efforts
03
How it runs
Counts down 40 sec, then beeps. Press Start, or hit Space. The digits turn green while a work block runs and grey on rest.
Sound is on by default: a rising pair for work, a falling pair for rest, a tick for the last three seconds and a three-note finish. Mute with the speaker button. The screen stays on while the timer runs and the tab title shows the time left.
Change anything in Settings under the timer. The last setup you used on this page is remembered in your browser.
Questions people ask
- Is 40/20 a good HIIT ratio?
- It is a solid default for group work. Two parts work to one part rest is hard but repeatable across eight or ten rounds.
- Can I loop 40 on and 20 off automatically?
- Yes. The 40/20 Tabata style page runs the pair on repeat with a beep at every switch.
- Will it beep if my hands are busy?
- The beep plays on its own while the tab is open, and the wake lock keeps the screen on so you can see the digits from the floor.
- Can I change the duration?
- Yes, set any number of seconds, or use the 30 and 45 second pages.
